January 28, 2011
Dear Members,
2011 is off to a great start for the Colorado Chapter of ICC. It's hard to believe it's almost February. Before I know it my term as president will be over and I will be joining the ranks of the Chapter "has beens". But, I'd better not get ahead of myself.
The chapter had such a great year in 2010 and I am really looking forward to seeing what this year has in store for us. We have already begun planning for things like the Board of Director's retreat, where we will be setting goals for the year and tending to the business of the chapter; the IGCC Code Development hearings to be in Dallas in May and the Final Action hearings to be held in Phoenix in November; the Colorado Chapter Educational Institute February 28-March 4; The Colorado Chapter business meeting on February 18th in Jefferson County; and some new and improved ways to communicate with each other and as a group.
Being new to this presidency I have already learned some wonderful things about this organization. We have been around for a very long time, over 50 years, in fact almost close to 60 and the chapter is thriving, growing and has an outstanding reputation both locally and nationally. You don't last that long and thrive this much without a lot of hard work and dedication and it has always been interesting to me to look back at where we have come from and how we got to where we are and know that it all happened thanks to VOLUNTEERS putting in countless hours of pure commitment to each other and to this organization. As I have said before, there is not a person in this chapter who would allow another person to fail. The support is tremendous and the relationships and networking cannot be matched.
I have made a point this year to sit down with as many of the past presidents of this organization as I can to get to know them better, find out what drove them to lead, get some of their background and learn what it takes to keep this chapter moving forward without forgetting to look back. I have already sat down with Tommy Thompson and I tell you that was so rewarding and fun that I cannot wait to meet with more of them. I had the honor of interviewing Dan Nickle a couple years back for an article in the Chapter newsletter and if you haven't taken the time to talk to some of these great folks who got us to the place that we are today then please just take the time to do so. So much history and so much to learn and we shouldn't make decisions for this group regarding our future without taking this important history into consideration.
I would like to take this opportunity to just ask, no challenge each of you to take ownership of this chapter. What is it that you want it to be? What do you want to see happen this coming year? What do you need from the Chapter and honestly, what does the chapter need from you? Again, we thrive because of volunteers. We are who we are and do what we do because of hundreds of volunteers making this chapter their own and giving that little bit extra to make it great. There are so many ways to be involved, from taking part in the Educational Institute through the Education Committee, the Code Change process through our Code Development Committee, the work going on at our local and state level with the Disaster Mitigation Committee, creating the Building Guides we put out through our Standardization Committee, taking part in what's happening at the state Capitol with our Legislative Committee and even being a part of deciding what education that we might offer at our bi-monthly business meetings through our Program Committee. There is even more opportunity to help behind the scenes in so many ways. We do have the ability to conduct a variety of business through email, conference calls and coming soon, social networking so the opportunities to be involved are almost limitless.
I look forward to a wonderful year with you all and I sincerely mean it when I say that you can contact me about anything and I will find a way to try and help or to answer any questions that you might have. We are great about sending out surveys to allow jurisdictions to see how other jurisdictions are handling a certain code issue or permitting question. We tally the results and all of them will soon be posted on the Chapter's website for referencing. The nice thing is that we are hundreds strong so if one person doesn't have an answer then it isn't minutes before someone does. That's another reason why we strive like we do. We are all here to help each other out. Please take time to take part in your chapter. You will be so very glad that you did.
Thank you all for the opportunity to serve this year as your president. I am excited about all of our opportunities and about the opportunities that we will be able to provide to others both locally and nationally because we are so strong and committed to excellence.
Shaunna Mozingo, President
Colorado Chapter of ICC
